Free day. Mount Ruapehu is the highest peak on the North Island. You can spend today exploring this rugged and isolated area that served as the setting for "Mordor". Although the scenery has been removed, if you drive 15 minutes up the mountain road to the village of Iwikau, all it takes is a little imagination to picture Mordor. The nearby slopes and parking lot saw Orcs attacking Elves and Men, with Elrond standing firm. The city of Wellington, New Zealand's capital since 1865, is situated around Wellington Harbour, with its houses clinging precipitously to the steep hillsides. Wellington is known for its wind, which is channeled through Cook Strait and blows most days. We suggest you explore Abel Tasman & Kahurangi National Parks, where the scene of the Hobbits leaving the Shire was filmed. Leave Nelson and drive to the Franz Josef glacier. Its pale shades of green and blue offer impressive views together with the immensity of the glacier itself. Accommodation.

Departure for Wanaka. North of Lake Wanaka, this town is known for its boating, fishing and skiing, with views of the surrounding mountains that reflect in the lake's waters on calm days. Poplar and willow trees grow on the shores of the lake, which make for a colorful spectacle in autumn. Accommodation.

Depart Wanaka for Queenstown. Drive along the winding Crown Range road to Queenstown. Near the summit, there is an opportunity to stop and enjoy the view. You can see the Anduin River, the Pillars of Argonath and, ahead, Dimrill Dale. Continuing through Crown Range, there are more opportunities to see locations used in the Trilogy and, once in the valley, you can take a short detour to the River Anduin.
